Up to seven Vallejo police officers may soon receive their walking papers to balance the city budget, with force reductions by Jan. 1.
On Tuesday night, the Vallejo City Council approved police officers layoff notice distribution, though layoffs for all seven are unlikely, due to a continued employee exodus, Police Chief Robert Nichelini said.
By the beginning of the year, the department will also need to demote 18 others.

If city spending continues at its current rate, Vallejo's deficit could rise as high as $12 million in the next five years, a new city report forecast Friday.
To emerge from Chapter 9 bankruptcy will require the city to show a federal bankruptcy judge that same 5-year spending plan without a deficit, city Finance Director Rob Stout said.
While the city's revenues have already fallen nearly 20 percent in the past two years, future revenue looks even worse, city executives wrote in a quarterly report to

A proposed update to the city's cable franchise laws could bring Vallejo an extra $212,000 a year for television broadcast-related expenses.
City Finance Director Rob Stout will propose the update, which aligns with new law relating to cable franchise agreements, at Tuesday's Vallejo City Council meeting.
Existing city law charges a cable franchise of its choice -- in this case, Comcast -- 10 cents per user per month to raise money to cover public, education and governmental purposes.

Vallejo officials are again scrambling to make up for a potential $2.5 million loss state legislators headed home on recess without passing needed budget cleanup legislation over the weekend.

To offset the likely hardship, state officials expected to back loans for the affected local entities.

Vallejo city officials said Monday they haven't decided what to do with an unexpected $800,000-plus tax payment weeks ago by Mare Island's developer.
Typically, developer Lennar Mare Island has two annual payments due to the city -- one in April, the second in December.
The funds go into a special island tax district and cover basic island services, such as police and fire protection, and landscape maintenance.

Vallejo City Manager Bob Adams says he will delay for two months issuing up to nine planned police officer layoff notices.
The decision came after hours of council debate, continued from recent meetings, over how to avoid the layoffs.
Mayor Osby Davis and Councilwomen Joanne Schivley and Stephanie Gomes strongly protested the delay, saying it was an unwise gamble with city finances.

County supervisors are expected to decide the winner at a special meeting today.
At Tuesday's Vallejo City Council meeting, Finance Director Rob Stout suggested that the city could lose nearly a half million dollars if the county goes with one ambulance service over another.
